SEO is not dead. Google’s own documentation says its AI features draw on the same search index and the same SEO best practices, and AI Mode alone passed a billion monthly users in 2026. What changed is what winning looks like: being cited inside an answer now matters alongside ranking in a list.

This is the hub for MiinDigital’s core guides. It explains how both systems work, what still matters, what changed and where to start, with a readiness score for your own site.

In short

SEO is the foundation and GEO is built on top of it. Search engines crawl, index and rank pages; AI answers retrieve, combine and cite passages from pages they can find and trust. Fix the SEO basics first, then make your content easy to quote and your brand easy to recognize.

What matters in 2026-2027

The short version

  • SEO isn’t dead. Google says its AI features use the same index and the same SEO best practices, with no extra requirements.
  • The two work differently: search engines crawl, index and rank pages. AI answers retrieve, combine and cite passages. Ranking well doesn’t guarantee a citation.
  • Clicks fell where AI answers appear, so being cited and recognized now matters alongside ranking.
  • AI tools favor pages that answer directly, are easy to quote, come from a recognizable brand or author, and back claims with specifics.
  • Order of work: fix the SEO foundation, build topic depth, then add GEO habits and measurement. Score your site below.

How do search engines and AI answers pick sources?

Search engines work in three stages, which Google describes in its guide to how Search works: they crawl the web to discover pages, index them to understand and store them, then rank the best matches when someone searches.

AI answers add a step on top. For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google may issue several related searches across subtopics, then writes one answer and links to supporting pages. ChatGPT and Perplexity work in a similar way with their own search crawlers. Your page competes to be one of a handful of cited sources, not one of ten blue links.

What still matters in traditional SEO?

Google still handles the large majority of searches worldwide, according to Statcounter, and the fundamentals haven’t moved:

  • Relevance: does the page match what the searcher wants?
  • Authority: do other credible sites link to and mention you?
  • Experience: is the page fast, readable on mobile and trustworthy?

Keyword research starts with intent, not volume. A search from someone ready to book a dentist is worth more than a big general query from someone browsing.

On every page, cover the basics: a unique descriptive title, a useful meta description, one clear H1, logical headings, internal links and descriptive alt text.

What changed with AI search?

Three things changed for anyone who depends on search traffic:

  • Fewer clicks on informational queries. Pew Research Center found people clicked a regular result in 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one. Ahrefs measured a 58% lower average click-through rate for top-ranking pages when an AI Overview appeared.
  • More places to be found. Google reports AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users, and ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly users in February 2026.
  • Brand recognition carries more weight. In a study of 75,000 brands, Ahrefs found web mentions of a brand correlated more strongly with AI Overview visibility than backlinks.

How do you optimize for AI answers?

  • Answer first. Put the direct answer in the first one or two sentences under each heading.
  • Be specific. The original GEO research (Princeton and others, KDD 2024) found that adding citations, quotations and statistics was among the most effective ways to raise visibility in AI answers, by up to 40% in their tests.
  • Be recognizable. Consistent brand details, real authors and mentions on other sites.
  • Stay reachable. Don’t block the crawlers AI search tools use. OpenAI says sites must allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in ChatGPT search summaries.

Where should you start?

  1. Months 1 to 2: fix the foundation. Search Console, indexing, speed, mobile, titles and meta descriptions.
  2. Months 2 to 4: build topic depth. Three to five topic clusters, linked together.
  3. Months 3 to 6: add GEO habits and measurement. Answer-first writing, author pages, brand consistency and a monthly prompt test.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO dead because of AI?

No. Google says its AI features use pages from its search index and that the same SEO best practices apply. What has changed is that ranking alone no longer guarantees the click.

What is the difference between GEO, AEO and AI SEO?

They describe the same goal with different names: getting your content used and cited in AI-generated answers. GEO (generative engine optimization) comes from the 2024 research paper and is the term MiinDigital uses.

Do I need an llms.txt file or special schema for AI search?

Google says there are no special optimizations, files or schema needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Good SEO and clear content come first.

How long does GEO take to work?

AI tools pick up changes as they recrawl your pages, which can take weeks. Brand recognition and topic authority take months. Track it monthly rather than daily.
