Social Media Character Limits Explained

Every platform has its own rules. Understanding them helps you write posts that never get cut off — and our character counter shows you where you stand in real time.

Twitter / X — 280 characters

Twitter doubled its original 140-character limit in 2017. At 280 characters you have roughly two or three short sentences. URLs count as 23 characters regardless of length. Keep your tweet punchy and leave room for retweets by aiming under 240.

LinkedIn post — 3,000 characters

LinkedIn posts have a 3,000-character limit, but the platform shows only the first ~210 characters before a “see more” cut-off in the feed. Write your hook in the first two lines to stop the scroll, then deliver value in the rest of the post.

Instagram caption — 2,200 characters

Instagram supports up to 2,200 characters per caption, but only the first 125 characters appear before the “more” truncation. Front-load your message and put hashtags at the end — or in the first comment — to keep the caption clean.

SEO meta title — 60 characters

Google typically displays the first 50–60 characters of your page title in search results. Beyond 60 characters it gets truncated with an ellipsis. Include your primary keyword near the front and keep your brand name at the end.

SEO meta description — 160 characters

Meta descriptions don’t directly affect rankings, but a well-written 150–160 character description improves click-through rate. Use an active voice, include your target keyword, and end with a clear call to action.

How Reading Time Is Calculated

Our tool estimates reading time at 200 words per minute, which reflects the average pace for online reading (studies place the average between 200–250 wpm for digital text). A 1,000-word blog post takes roughly 5 minutes to read; a 300-word email takes about 1.5 minutes.

Why does reading time matter? Displaying “5 min read” on a blog post sets expectations, reduces bounce rate, and builds trust with readers before they start. Medium and Substack show reading time by default for exactly this reason.

Recommended word counts by content type

  • Tweet / X post: under 40 words (280 character limit)
  • Email subject line: 6–10 words for best open rates
  • Email body: 50–200 words for marketing emails; longer for newsletters
  • Blog post (SEO): 1,500–2,500 words for competitive keywords
  • Landing page: 300–500 words above the fold; 1,000+ for full page
  • LinkedIn article: 1,500–2,000 words for best organic reach

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a word count tool?

A word count tool counts the number of words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs in a piece of text. Our tool also calculates reading time and checks your content against social media and SEO character limits, making it more than a basic word counter.

How do I check my character count for Twitter?

Paste your tweet text into the tool above. The Twitter / X bar shows your live character count against the 280-character limit. The bar turns orange at 224 characters (80%) and red if you go over 280.

Does the word counter work for SEO content?

Yes. Beyond counting words, the tool shows whether your meta title and meta description fit within Google’s recommended limits (60 and 160 characters respectively). This is one of the most practical uses for SEO writers and content marketers.

How accurate is the reading time estimate?

The reading time is based on 200 words per minute, a commonly cited average for online reading. It’s an estimate — technical content or long-form journalism may take longer, while simple conversational text may be faster. It’s best used as a relative guide.

Does this tool store or save my text?

No. All processing happens directly in your browser. Your text is never sent to any server or stored anywhere. You can use the tool with complete privacy.

Can I use this word counter on mobile?

Yes, the tool is fully responsive and works on any smartphone or tablet browser — no app download needed.

Is the Word Count Tool free?

Yes, completely free with unlimited use and no account required.
