What Each Metric Means
- CTR (Click-Through Rate): the percentage of people who saw your ad and clicked it. Calculated as clicks ÷ impressions × 100.
- CPC (Cost Per Click): the average amount you pay for each click. Calculated as ad spend ÷ clicks.
- CPM (Cost Per Mille): the cost per 1,000 impressions. Calculated as (ad spend ÷ impressions) × 1,000.
- Conversion Rate: the percentage of clicks that turned into a conversion. Calculated as conversions ÷ clicks × 100.
- CPA (Cost Per Acquisition): the average cost to generate one conversion. Calculated as ad spend ÷ conversions.
- ROAS (Return on Ad Spend): how much revenue you earn for every dollar spent. Calculated as revenue ÷ ad spend.
- ROI (Return on Investment): your net return as a percentage of spend. Calculated as (revenue − ad spend) ÷ ad spend × 100.
Why Track These Metrics Together
No single PPC metric tells the whole story. A low CPC looks great until you notice the conversion rate is also low, which drives CPA up. A high CTR is meaningless if none of those clicks convert. Looking at CTR, CPC, conversion rate, CPA, and ROAS side by side shows you where a campaign is actually leaking value, top of funnel (ad relevance), mid funnel (landing page), or bottom of funnel (offer or pricing), so you know exactly what to fix first.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good ROAS?
It depends on your margins, but a commonly cited benchmark for a healthy e-commerce or lead-gen campaign is 4x or higher, meaning $4 of revenue for every $1 spent. Businesses with thinner margins need a higher ROAS to be profitable; businesses with high margins can be profitable at a lower ROAS.
What’s the difference between ROAS and ROI?
ROAS is revenue divided by ad spend (a ratio, e.g. “4x”). ROI is net profit divided by ad spend, expressed as a percentage, and it accounts for the cost itself being subtracted from revenue first. A ROAS of 4x is equivalent to an ROI of 300%.
Why is my CPA high even with a good CTR?
A high CTR with a high CPA usually points to a conversion rate problem, people are clicking your ad but not converting once they land. Check landing page relevance, page load speed, form length, and whether the offer matches what the ad promised.
Does this calculator work for Facebook, LinkedIn, or TikTok ads, not just Google Ads?
Yes, the formulas for CTR, CPC, CPM, conversion rate, CPA, ROAS, and ROI are the same across ad platforms. Just plug in the impressions, clicks, spend, conversions, and revenue from whichever platform’s reporting dashboard you’re using.
Is this tool free and does it store my data?
