Google released its September 2026 spam update on 24 September, and unlike its recent spam updates this one may take up to two weeks to finish rolling out. That is roughly five times longer than the three days its August 2026 spam update took, according to a rollout comparison from ppc.land.

For a solo marketer or small business site, a two-week window makes cause and effect hard to read. Any ranking swing between now and around 8 October could be this update, an unrelated core update, or ordinary noise, so the useful move is to check your own site against Google’s named spam policies rather than guess.

In short

Google’s September 2026 spam update started on 24 September and may take up to two weeks to complete, so check your site against Google’s named spam policies before assuming a ranking change is caused by it.

What changed: a two week rollout, the longest of 2026

Google's own Search Status Dashboard logged the update as starting at 09:15 Pacific on 24 September, with the note: "Released the September 2026 spam update, which applies globally and to all languages. The rollout may take up to two weeks to complete."

That is a real change of pace. Per ppc.land's comparison of 2026 spam updates, March finished in 19.5 hours, June took two days and August took three days. Google's John Mueller confirmed the longer timeline, telling Search Engine Roundtable it was "likely to take longer than some of the previous ones."

Why the extra length matters for small sites

With a rollout window this wide, it becomes hard to isolate this update's effect from other ranking movement happening at the same time, a point ppc.land raises directly. If you don't have a dedicated rank tracker, resist pinning every dip or gain over the next two weeks solely on this update.

It also helps to know what this update is not. It enforces Google's existing spam policies, covering categories such as scaled content abuse, site reputation abuse, expired domain abuse, doorway abuse and fake or unmoderated reviews, rather than introducing a new ranking system. If none of those describe your site, this update alone is unlikely to be the reason for a change you see.

What to check this week

Run through the checklist above honestly. Each item maps to one of Google's named spam policy categories, so a tick is a specific, fixable practice rather than a vague risk.

  • If nothing applies, don't make reactive site-wide changes based on rank noise this fortnight.
  • If one or two apply, fix that specific practice rather than overhauling the whole site.
  • Recheck your Search Console performance data after the rollout finishes around 8 October, to see whether any change actually stuck.

Frequently asked questions

Is the September 2026 spam update a core update?

No. Google's status dashboard lists it separately as a spam update, which targets specific policy violations such as scaled content abuse or site reputation abuse, rather than Google's broader relevance and quality ranking systems.

How long will the rollout take?

Up to two weeks from its 24 September start, according to Google, which makes it around five times longer than the three day August 2026 spam update.

My rankings dropped this week, is this the cause?

Maybe, but you cannot be sure. Google itself says the rollout may take up to two weeks, and other ranking changes can land in that same window, so run the checklist above before concluding it is this update.

I ticked several boxes on the checklist, what now?

Fix the specific practice. There is no separate recovery request to file for an algorithmic spam update, so review Google's spam policies page for the exact definition of each category before you change anything.
