What’s in Your Favicon Pack

  • favicon.ico: 16, 32 and 48 px icons in one file. Many browsers and feed readers still request it by default.
  • favicon-16×16.png and favicon-32×32.png: browser tabs, bookmarks and history.
  • favicon-48×48.png: Windows shortcuts, and a good size for Google, which recommends favicons larger than 48×48 px.
  • apple-touch-icon.png (180×180): iPhone and iPad home screens.
  • android-chrome-192×192.png and 512×512.png: Android home screens and installable web apps.
  • site.webmanifest: tells mobile browsers your site name, icons and theme colour.

Why Your Favicon Matters

Your favicon appears in browser tabs, bookmarks and next to your site in Google’s mobile results. Without one, Google shows a generic globe, and a blurry icon makes the site look unfinished. A clear favicon helps people find your tab and recognise your brand in search.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a favicon be?

You need several sizes: 16 and 32 px for browser tabs, 48 px for Windows, 180 px for iPhones and 192 and 512 px for Android. This tool creates all of them from one image of at least 512×512 px.

Do I still need a favicon.ico file?

Yes. Modern browsers read the PNG tags, but many browsers, feed readers and crawlers still request /favicon.ico automatically.

How do I add a favicon to WordPress?

The quickest way is to upload the 512×512 PNG as your Site Icon under Settings → General or Appearance → Customize → Site Identity. For full control, upload all the files to your site’s root folder and add the HTML tags to your theme header.

Why doesn’t my favicon show in Google?

Google has to recrawl your homepage first, which can take days or weeks. Make sure the favicon is linked in your homepage <head>, isn’t blocked by robots.txt and is square. Google recommends a size larger than 48×48 px.

Is my logo uploaded to a server?

No. The icons, the .ico file and the ZIP are all created in your browser.
