See our website building servicesHow to Use the Base64 Encoder & Decoder
- Choose Text or Image mode using the tabs at the top of the tool.
- For text: select “Encode” to convert plain text into Base64, or “Decode” to convert a Base64 string back into readable text. Type or paste your input, click Convert, then copy the result.
- For images: drag and drop or click to upload an image on the left to get its Base64 data URI, or paste a Base64 string / data URI on the right and click “Preview Image” to view and download the decoded image.
- Use the Swap button in text mode to quickly reverse the input and output: handy for round-trip testing.
What Is Base64 Encoding?
Base64 is a way of encoding binary data (like images or files) or text into a string made up only of letters, numbers, and a few symbols (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, +, /). It’s used everywhere on the web, from embedding small images directly into HTML or CSS, to sending file attachments in emails, to storing binary data in JSON or XML formats that only support text.
- It’s not encryption. Base64 is easily reversible by anyone: it does not protect or hide sensitive data. Never use it as a substitute for real encryption.
- It increases size by about 33%. Encoded data is roughly a third larger than the original, since 3 bytes of binary become 4 characters of text.
- It’s commonly used for data URIs: embedding small images directly into HTML/CSS as
data:image/png;base64,...to save an extra HTTP request.
Common Use Cases for Marketers & Developers
Digital marketers and developers run into Base64 more often than they might expect:
- Embedding small icons or logos directly into email HTML so they always display, even when images are blocked by the recipient’s email client.
- Debugging API responses that return images or files as Base64 strings inside a JSON payload.
- Testing webhook payloads from platforms that encode attachments or file data as Base64.
- Quickly inspecting a data URI pasted from browser dev tools to see what image it actually represents.
Frequently asked questions
Is Base64 encoding the same as encryption?
No. Base64 is an encoding format, not encryption, it does not add security or hide information. Anyone can decode a Base64 string back to its original form instantly. Use proper encryption (like AES) for actually protecting sensitive data.
Why does my Base64 output look longer than my original text?
Base64 encoding increases data size by roughly 33% because it represents every 3 bytes of original data as 4 text characters. This is expected and normal.
Can I encode an image to Base64 and use it directly in CSS or HTML?
Yes. Use the “Image → Base64” tab to get a full data URI (e.g. data:image/png;base64,...), then paste it directly as a CSS background-image: url(...) value or an HTML <img src="..."> attribute.
Why did decoding my Base64 string fail?
This usually means the string has been altered, truncated, or contains characters that aren’t valid Base64 (only A–Z, a–z, 0–9, +, /, and = padding are valid). Make sure you’ve copied the entire string with no extra spaces or line breaks in the middle.
Is this tool free and does it upload my files anywhere?
Yes, completely free with no account required. All encoding and decoding happens locally in your browser using JavaScript, nothing is uploaded to any server.
