What Is Schema Markup and Why Does It Matter for SEO?
Schema markup is structured data code, written in JSON-LD format, that you add to your web pages to help search engines understand your content. It uses the vocabulary defined at schema.org, a collaborative project backed by Google, Bing, Yahoo, and Yandex.
- Eligibility for rich results: structured data can make pages eligible for rich results such as product details, breadcrumbs and review stars. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in 2026, so FAQ schema no longer changes how a listing looks in search.
- Article schema helps Google understand the headline, author and publication dates of a post.
- WebPage and breadcrumb schema enables Google to display cleaner URL breadcrumbs in search results and understand your site’s architecture.
- No ranking guarantee: structured data does not directly boost rankings. Its value is helping Google understand the page and making it eligible for rich results.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I paste the generated JSON-LD code?
Paste it inside the <head> tag of your HTML, or use a Custom HTML block in WordPress Gutenberg, a <script> block in your theme’s header, or a plugin like Yoast SEO or RankMath (which has built-in schema fields). Google can read JSON-LD anywhere on the page, but <head> is the convention.
How many FAQ questions can I add?
There is no limit in the schema.org specification. Google no longer shows FAQ rich results, so only add FAQ markup to pages that really have a FAQ section, and don’t expect it to change your search listing.
Does schema markup work on all pages?
You can add schema markup to any page, but match the schema type to the page content. Use FAQPage only on pages that actually contain FAQ content, Article/BlogPosting only on article pages, and WebPage for general pages. Mismatching schema to content can lead to manual penalties from Google.
Is JSON-LD better than Microdata or RDFa for schema?
Yes, Google recommends JSON-LD for all structured data. It keeps the markup separate from your visible HTML, which makes it easier to add, maintain, and update without touching your page’s visual layout.
How do I check if my schema is working?
After adding the code to your page, use Google’s Rich Results Test to validate it. It shows detected schema types, any errors, and a preview of what rich results might appear. You can also use the Schema.org Validator for broader JSON-LD validation.
Can I use multiple schema types on one page?
Yes. Many pages benefit from combining types, for example, a blog post page might use both Article schema and FAQPage schema if it has a FAQ section at the bottom. Each schema block should be a separate <script type="application/ld+json"> tag.
